Premiere of Sylph October 11 + 12th!
Tickets --> sylph.brownpapertickets.com/
Dawn Springer Dance Projects presents Sylph, a contemporary dance performance that examines the humanity behind the rigor of ballet artistry. Set in the round, Sylph is a collaboration between choreographer Dawn Springer and acclaimed composer-percussionist Jon Mueller, with Aidan Baker, Faith Coloccia, and five internationally celebrated ballet dancers. Three exclusive performances invite the audience into an intimate experience with the exceptional artistry of Milwaukee's most accomplished ballerinas and the expansive views from the Jan Serr Studio.
The term sylph refers to a fairly-like creature in folklore and is often used to describe a slender young woman. This production, featuring costume design by Leslie Vaglica and lighting by Ellie Rabinowitz, expands beyond flattened representations of the stereotypical roles women are often expected to inhabit, both on and off stage.

thewhole.brownpapertickets.comCurrent and former Milwaukee Ballet Artists collaborate with experimental artists Jon Mueller (composer) and Dawn Springer (choreographer). The music in the performance was originally written and recorded in 2010 by Mueller for his record ‘The Whole’, released by Type Recordings in the UK. For this performance, it has been re-imagined for piano, percussion and voice by Mueller and David Utzinger, and this will be the premiere live performance of this material. Dawn Springer’s choreography set to Mueller’s composition was created for Ania Hidalgo, Rachel Malehorn, & Janel Meindersee.
This project will mark Mueller and Springer's 4th collaboration. Previous commissions have included two consecutive projects with the Eaux Claires Music and Arts Festival, as well as the 2017 Dance Series at Lawrence University and in Real Time at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee. Their collaborations are meta-inquiries into live performance, asking how we know what is before us. Their work has been described as "mesmerizing" by Spin Magazine, and as an "inherently visceral experience" by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
