Sylph examines the weight and interior experience of gendered expectations in ballet. The piece was developed in close collaboration with five professional ballet artists over the past year. With music by renowned composer and percussionist Jon Mueller, the piece will premiere in the round October 11th and 12th at the Jan Serr Studio on Milwaukee’s East Side. Exploring extreme ranges of physical movement quality, from hyper exactitude and failed attempts at levitation, to full-bodied weighted surrender, the piece asks how we both define and consume femininity as viewers.

We are currently raising funds to support the creation of a new evening-length dance work, Sylph. Developed in close collaboration with 5 ballet dancers over the past year, Sylph examines the interior experience of the feminine in ballet, and asks how we define and consume it as viewers. With music by composer Jon Mueller, dancers explore their agency, power, and connection to each other in this performance in the round.

Premier: Jan Serr Studio, October 11 + 12

Current dancers: Sejain Bastidas, Annia Hidalgo, Janel Meindersee, and Itzel Hernandez. Each of these dancers have illustrious careers and have performed around the world. A vital aspect of our mission is to create a sustainable, free-lance platform in Milwaukee for the exceptionally talented dancers who call MKE home.

The overall project is estimated to cost between $20,000-$23,000 including $3319 in space rentals and labor, $12,050 in dancer rehearsal and performance fees, $3000 in equipment and materials, and $2000 designer fees
Through grants and individual donations, we have currently raised $5,799.75 (as of August 20th, 2024)! Thank you to our generous supporters!
